January 8, 2020Thanksgiving & Gratitude
It’s Thanksgiving week again. Many of us will be thinking about what makes us thankful. Gratitude is a phenomenon that seldom finds a home for expression, yet it lies all around us in the times, places, and people with whom we least expect. The random smile from the co-worker who’s glad you’ve arrived to make their day more manageable; the person who truly means, “How are you?” in their greeting; and the client that shakes your hand, not just in a required social business context, but in a way that lets you know, “I appreciate what you’ve done, and it’s made a difference to me.” These are the subtle reinforcements that remind us that we do matter in the lives of others.
Our place in the world does have a value and it does have a meaning, and it is impactful to others. It should drive us to strive to do better and be better. But, the constant pressures of everyday life sometimes fool us into believing that we don’t matter as much or that our contributions have no impact on the people we want to notice. But consider this; others may likely feel the same as you. Forgotten, unappreciated, ignored, lonely. A deficit of value (how significant am I?) and of worth (how great am I?). But there is another way to look at this.
Gratitude sometimes finds a place not just in the acknowledgment of the good deeds and fortunes afforded us, but also in our actions towards others that demonstrate that we are indeed thankful. This forward payment of gratitude allows us to realize that we can be more than just for ourselves. That we can reach out, put ourselves aside, and help bring comfort, support, and happiness to the lives of others. Because, whether others notice or not, showing your gratitude towards them through thoughtfulness, empathy, and compassion, is you realizing that gratitude can be circular. The more you practice gratitude, the more reason you’ll have to be grateful.
At Athreon, we have many reasons to be thankful. We are grateful to our clients who trust us with their reputations and their sensitive information. To our business partners who help support an array of business needs. And to our staff members who put all the pieces of our operations together. To all of these people and their loved ones, we want to extend a sincere Thank You. We are grateful to you, and we wish all of you and your friends and families a very Happy Thanksgiving.
