Medical Scribe FAQs

What does a scribe do?

A medical scribe (sometimes called a scribe, remote scribe, virtual scribe, or telescribe) listens to real-time conversations between a caregiver (doctor, nurse, physician assistant, or other licensed healthcare practitioner) and a patient. The scribe listens for pertinent medical details in the conversation and enters them into the patient’s electronic health record (EHR).

What are the prerequisites to be a virtual medical scribe for Athreon?

Athreon’s medical scribes must be high school graduates or GED recipients who have also completed a medical scribe training program. We may consider applicants without formalized training who have 6 months’ prior experience working as a medical scribe. If you’re currently enrolled in a medical scribe training program, please wait until you complete it before applying.

Can Athreon train me to be a medical scribe?

No. Athreon does not offer formalized scribe training. Some reputable providers of online, self-paced medical scribe training include:

  • Medical Scribe Training Systems
  • Pacific Medical Training

Do remote scribes need to be certified?

No. Training and certification for medical scribes should not be confused. Training is required so a scribe can capture data for the medical record timely, accurately, and efficiently. No officially sanctioned body certifies medical scribes.

Will I be an employee or independent contractor?

Athreon virtual medical scribe positions are employee status.

Do you require a background check and drug test?

Yes. Due to the sensitive nature of the work, all scribes must undergo a background check and drug screening.

Can I work as a scribe part-time or full-time?

Yes. Athreon virtual scribes are required to work a minimum of three 8-hour shifts per week. Full-time opportunities are available as well.

I’m a medical student, and I want to work as a scribe. Can you schedule me around my classes?

Yes. Athreon will hire scribes that can work a consistent set schedule of at least 3 eight-hour shifts per week.

What if I need to change my schedule?

We aim to accommodate schedule preferences, where possible, with advance notice. However, individuals with irregular availability are not well-suited to scribing work.

Will you hire scribes to work temporarily during a school break or as a summertime job?

No. Based on the needs of our clients, we require that our scribes be available to work a minimum of 12 consecutive months.

I live outside the United States. Can I scribe for Athreon?

No. Athreon scribes must reside in the United States.

How does an Athreon virtual scribe do their work from home?

Depending on the client’s workflow, you may have access to web meeting software to listen to live patient-doctor conversations, or you may listen to recorded conversations. You will simultaneously access the client’s EHR to input patient data. You will work from your home office.

What EHRs do scribes use?

Athreon’s clients use a variety of EHR systems. Some Athreon virtual scribes who scribe for a single provider use one EHR. Others who scribe for multiple providers may use two or more EHR systems.

When do Athreon medical scribes work?

Scribes shadow their provider’s schedule, taking breaks and lunches when their physician does. Athreon virtual scribes are required to work a minimum of three 8-hour shifts per week.

Will I scribe for doctors with accents?

Possibly. Some caregivers do not speak English as their native language. Fortunately, all our work at home virtual scribe jobs have fantastic support to help you with physicians who speak English as a second language (ESL). Our supportive QA team, trainers, and even the doctors themselves will provide valuable feedback to help you acclimate.

How many doctors do scribes work with?

This depends on the scribe’s availability, and the volume of work Athreon receives. Our virtual scribes routinely convert speech to text for a primary physician and a secondary caregiver. This approach helps for backup purposes when a scribe takes leave.

Will I get feedback on the scribing work I do?

Yes. Physicians will routinely give feedback to their scribes. This may happen at the start or end of your shift or between patient visits. Likewise, Athreon’s trainers and QA staff members will provide coaching.

How do I get the scribe work?

Scribes work primarily via web meeting software and online EHR portals.

When will I be paid?

Athreon pays scribes weekly via direct deposit.

Are health benefits available for medical scribes?

Scribes that work full time are eligible for health, vision, and dental benefits.
